ethirkaalam film review by reowned film critic hassan muthalib

Some Malaysian Cinema history trivia:

The first Malaysian Tamil film was NAAN ORU MALAYSIAN
(I Am a Malaysian, PANSHA, 1991), shot on 35 mm &
mostly shown in estates. The first digital feature was
CHEMMAN CHAALAI (The Gravel Road, DEEPAK KUMARAN
MENON, 2004) which became the first local Tamil film
to be screened in KL & Penang, with the digital
projection system at Golden Screen Cinemas. AANDAL
(SANTOSH KESAVAN, 2005) came next. UYIR (The Soul, M S
PREMNATH PILLAI, 2005), a DV comedy horror feature had
a 2-day run in Odeon, KL )on 31 Dec 2005 & 1 Jan
2006). ETHIRKAALAM (The Future is Yours, KUMARESAN,
2006) was shot on a broadcast camera with a DV Cam
Recorder & is the first film to be fully completed
within Malaysia. The kinetransfer was done at FINAS
while processing & printing were done at Gaya Lab. It
is also the first film to have screenings at theatres
all over Malaysia, & in Singapore. Its 2 hours 45
minutes is worth your ticket cost. And the
kinetransfer from digital is better than some of the
local HD-shot films.
