Super Star Rajini

Walk on any street in Tamil Nadu, and nine out of ten, the walls will be plastered with a poster of Rajnikanth. Either it will be on a shop board, or it will be painted on the wall, or it will be a poster from one of his films.

The Rajnikanth fever in the state is something that we live with, we work with and simply accept. But for anyone who does not experience it first hand, it remains an unsolvable mystery. How can this man, who is dark, can’t dance, who looks more like a villain than a hero, be a Superstar? That is simply the magic and charisma of Rajnikanth, and that is what NDTV tried to understand in a 30-minute programme, Witness, yesterday. Simply titled The Rajni Factor, a short, crisp show, with quotes from various bigwigs in the industry, tried to delve deep into the enigma called Rajni, who is, with his film Sivaji, one of the highest paid actors in India!

Khans far away

Yes, you read right. At 16 crores for his current film, Rajnikanth has even beaten the Khans and the Big B, who are said to earn between 7 and 10 crores. For Chandramukhi itself, the Superstar earned 10 crores, and looks like he is the only one who can break his own record. Ramkumar said during the show, “We make such huge profits with his film, that we don’t see anything wrong in paying him the amount, it is only fair.” A sentiment echoed by AVM Saravanan, who is currently producing Sivaji.

“We don’t mind paying him considering the profits we make. In fact, for Sivaji, I have paid him an advance of Rs 1001, and he was bighearted enough to say that I could pay him the rest after the movie is complete and after I have taken care of my business formalities.”

The phenomenon of the Superstar

As NDTV tried to understand the phenomenon of the Superstar, one of the verdicts that emerged was his peers in cinema don’t even think it possible to compete with him. He is the undisputed Superstar, and competition exists only for second place. Vijay, who is at number two and who strongly emulates Rajnikanth, earns 4 crores, a huge gap between the first place and the second. Vikram is next earning 3 crores, while Ajith earns two crores.

Rajini’s flop = others’ hit

The margin between a Superstar film and any other actor’s film is so huge that even box office numbers are measured differently. While Baba, Rajni’s film made 20 crores at the box office, it was considered a flop by Rajni standards, as anything less than 35 crores is a flop for a Rajni film.In fact, Anniyan, Vikram’s film that made 50 crores, is the only film to have touched the Chandramukhi 50 crore mark.

REVIEW

Thank you Prem for updating and guys i do agree with Prem, we should just scrap the plan if only 6 of us are going. i bet its gonna be difficult to bahagikan the expenses and rooms and all that.
we can also go some other time, perhaps during the year end or something when a majority CAN make it with proper finances to splash :)

How Is It.........?

Superman Returns - Still Superman meh? Sien ledi leh!

synopsis:

Following a mysterious absence of several years, the Man of Steel returns to Earth in a new chapter in the powerful saga of one of the world's best-loved superheroes. While dealing with an old enemy's plot to render him powerless once and for all, Superman faces the heartbreaking realization that the woman he loves, Lois Lane, has moved on with her life. Or has she?Superman's bittersweet return challenges him to bridge the distance between them while finding a place in a society that has learned to survive without him. In an attempt to protect the world he loves from cataclysmic destruction, Superman embarks on an epic journey of redemption that takes him from the depths of the ocean to the far reaches of outer space.

I actually quite skeptical about this movie, of coz hes my chilhood hero n all but it has been 30 over yrs alredi!I still remember last time got this Astro Boy, Ultraman and then this Superman that was long time ago ok? of coz the whole civilisation moved alot further than that era alredi and those who used to adores are now consider old fark ledi!As age catches up, taste and prefrences also will change according to the enviroment and surroundings, and Superman in 2006 is defnitely not as exciting as Superman in the 70s and 80s.

The red striking underwear on the outside is old trick ledi .... not much people fall for that nowadays, society today demand a more macho hero who dont play underwear underwear one.In fact even die hard fan like me also prefer to see something else ...... I actually found a group of actor who is also into this superheros stunts themselves. They can do all kinda action from leaping off tall buildings or stopping a bullet with their bare hands. If those peeple in hollywood hire them in their latest movie I m sure it would be an instant hit!Who am I toking about? Scroll down and see for yourself ler ....

Pressure on Ajith

A section of actors has been reportedly been urging Ajith to file an official complaint against director Bala for reportedly threatening him for refusing to act in Naan Kadavul.

Reports in the vernacular press have been suggesting that Ajith was grilled by some henchmen reportedly sent by Bala after the actor refused to be part of Naan Kadavul.

Though Bala and Ajith both said that they have sorted out the differences between them mutually, reports of Ajith being threatened have created ripples in the industry.

Major voices in Kollywood wants the Nadigar Sangam to intervene in the issue and safeguard the interests of the actor.

They have sent their representations to Nadigar Sangam president Vijayakanth in this regard. They have even threatened to go on a one-day token strike against Bala if the issue is not sorted out soon.

Meanwhile fans of Ajith have been continuing protests against Bala. Posters have been struck by them condemning Bala in different parts of the State.

Meanwhile, it is also learnt that Vishnu Vardhan, who was to do a film for Bala, has now dropped it. Instead, he is penciled to do a movie with Ajith.

Is the industry rallying against Bala?

Move over King Khan, Rajni’s the real BO king

Chennai: His fan following is phenomenal. His movies and mannerisms have seduced even Japan. Last year, 10 of his fans flew down from Tokyo to watch his superhit Chandramukhi. Even at 56, Rajnikanth rules. And now the buzz is that his forthcoming film Sivaji could fetch him a mindboggling, unheard of amount.

So how much would his take-home be? Upwards of Rs 20 crore if the film is a success, according to industry guesstimates. Says a Chennai film expert, “In Sivaji, as in Chandramukhi, Rajnikanth has collected just a token of Rs 1,001 as signing amount. His payment — around Rs 16-17 crore — came from the success of Chandramukhi. Sivaji may fetch him more since along with distribution rights in a few territories, the actor will get 50% of profits after cost is recovered.” In other words, it could be more than what Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan together charge for a film. He’s also the second highest paid Asian actor after Jackie Chan.

What’s the secret recipe that has created the enduring Rajnikanth mystique? Is it style? Is it action? Is it his onscreen portrayal of the common man? Is it the Robinhood image? Could it be that all these factors have combined to turn this former carpenter-turned-coolie-turnedbus conductor into a superstar. Tamil political periodical Thuglak’s editor Cho S Ramasamy, who had encouraged the actor to join politics, points out that both style and stunts come naturally to Rajnikanth but there is nothing special in his acting or the roles he has essayed. “What sells is his simplicity,” he says. “Even at the peak of his acting career he did not dye his greying hair and always presented himself as he is,” says Cho.

Rajni’s style of acting and choice of characters is original. Director K Balachander once famously said that he had seen ‘fire in the eye’ of young Shivaji Rao Gaikwad (Rajni as we now know him). He began with anti-hero and villain roles and soon made it big as a hero. The cigarette flipping, throwing back of his hair and his unique dialogue delivery enamoured him to the public.

In his later films, with an eye on politics, he played domestic help in Muthu (a superhit in Japan), a milkman in Annamalai, an auto driver in Bhasha, a don in Dalapati and a local thug in Baba. But in all these roles, he ensured the defeat of haves by have-nots. Rajnikanth is also known to be very selective about roles: he refused Shankar’s film Mudalvan for its strong political slant.

It is also known that Rajnikanth partly directs the films he acts in and stamps it with his signature. Though Chandramukhi came after Rajnikanth turned away from politics and made a departure from his Robinhood image, the film still bears his trademark: his walk, stance, stunts and sartorial style. Chandramukhi has already fetched $2.5 million from screenings abroad and broken all Indian box-office records. The official Cannes trade report on 20 Indian box-office hits pegs Chandramukhi earnings at Rs 60 crore, the highest among Indian films. This is followed by another Rajni blockbuster Anniyan (Rs 57 crore). But a film trade expert puts the earnings of Chandramukhi even higher around Rs 80 crore. Now there is higher expectation from Sivaji where he works with superstar director S Shankar, director of Anniyan. Bollywood’s loss, Kollywood’s gain

When Rajni arrived in Bollywood with his trademark cigarette flip, he seemed destined to have a long and distinguished innings in Hindi films. Long it was but hardly distinguished. Since his successful debut in Andha Kanoon (1983), Rajnikanth acted in over 20 Hindi movies over the next decade and half. But, unlike in Tamil movies, his flops far outnumbered the hits. Though his stylised mannerisms and special-effect fight scenes earned him claps and whistles from the front benchers, the gentry never warmed to him. And neither did the big Mumbai producers and directors.

Even when a Rajni film was successful, someone else got the acclaim. In Andha Kanoon and Hum, Amitabh got the credit. Another hit Chalbaaz was an out and out Sridevi flick while in K C Bokadia’s Phool Bane Angarey, Rekha had the bigger and better part.

ILLUSTRATION: NEELABH

Film trade expert Komal Nahta points out that no south Indian hero has made it big in Hindi films. Over the years many regional superstars such as NT Rama Rao, Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Haasan, Chiranjeevi, Nagarjun, Venkatesh have tried their luck in Hindi films. But only Kamal Haasan, who arrived with a bang in 1981 with two hits Ek Duje Ke Liye and Sanam Teri Kasam, and continues to act in the occasional movie. made any kind of impact. Yet, neither Kamal nor Rajni really became top Bollywood heroes. Box Office editor Vinod Mirani feels that a hero with moustache and curly hair, a prominent feature of most South Indian heroes, doesn’t really work in Bollywood. As social scientist Shiv Vishwanathan points out, “In Bollywood, it is the villain who had the moustache.” Adds Vishwanathan, “There’s a mindset that North is masculine and South is feminine.” Which is why South Indian heroines have ruled Bollywood. In this scenario, obviously, Rajnikanth had little chance.

It's England's Worldcup

England secured their place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago but they left it late before striking through Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard on Thursday, 15 June 2006.

Crouch broke the deadlock in Nuremberg with a headed goal in the 83rd minute and his Liverpool team-mate Gerrard added a superb second in the 91st minute. England, who welcomed back Wayne Rooney as a second-half substitute, have taken six points from their two Group B matches while Trinidad and Tobago remain on one point.

David BECKHAM (ENG), Budweiser Man of the Match
I think you can safely say that you haven’t seen the best of us yet, but we are almost through to the next round. You cannot argue with the fact that we have won both of our games so far. I have to pay a special tribute to the fans who were magnificent for us throughout the game. They believe and we believe to. I know we left it late, but we did it. I was also pleased to see Wayne Rooney in the team. The world deserves to see a player like him…

Why is Lelaki Komunis Terakhir banned in Malaysia?

The following is taken from the blog of Amir Muhammad's banned film Lelaki Komunis Terakhir.

~ ~ ~

In March 2006 we submitted my documentary Lelaki Komunis Terakhir (known in English as The Last Communist) to the Malaysian Film Censorship Board (LPF). “We” in this case refers to myself as well as Red Films, the local production company which is the co-producer.

Lelaki Komunis Terakhir is a semi-musical road movie documentary tracing the towns in which Chin Peng (exiled leader of the banned Communist Party of Malaya) lived in from birth to national independence in 1957. It does not include any interviews with, or even photographs of, Chin Peng himself. The documentary features interviews with people who live in those same present-day towns such as Sitiawan, Bidor, Taiping, Ipoh and Betong, Thailand. Along the way there are also specially-composed songs and capsule biographical data explaining what Chin Peng did in those towns. Chin Peng himself is mentioned only once during the interviews.
What were my expectations upon submission to LPF? I can honestly say, “I don’t know.” Censorship in this country is an unpredictable thing. I am not a censor so I wouldn’t know what a censor would look out for or find objectionable. I just hoped for the best.

Lelaki Komunis Terakhir had been shot over the course of 4 weeks in late 2005. The total budget including promotion is RM80,000. The shoot had the necessary permit from the National Film Development Corporation (Finas). This was not a ‘guerrilla’ or ‘underground’ shoot and Red Films is a licensed production company responsible for, among others, last year’s teen futsal romance Gol & Gincu.

The funding came partly from the Jan Vrijman Fund of Amsterdam which is a documentary fund for developing countries and not (as a letter in last year’s Berita Harian claimed) a body responsible for spreading communism worldwide.

When the news came out that the documentary was going to be made, UMNO Youth issued a single protest letter. As I had not even started shooting, they were probably making an assumption about its content. I did not respond to this protest letter as I believed the proper thing to do is to make the documentary first.

Lelaki Komunis Terakhir made its world premiere at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival in February. The audience included the Malaysian ambassador to Germany who said he enjoyed it. It has since been invited to 14 other film festivals around the world, including London, Seattle, Vancouver and Hong Kong. All these invites were received up to and including April this year.
In April we received the good news: Lelaki Komunis Terakhir was passed uncut by the censors. Yes, not a single cut. And the rating given was U, meaning suitable for all ages. After a meeting that we had with LPF chairman, he clarified that this approval meant that we could screen it in the three digital cinemas we had asked for: namely, the Golden Screen Cinemas of MidValley, One Utama Kuala Lumpur and Gurney Plaza, Penang. This approval did not include VCD/DVD sales and TV broadcast; we were made to understand that these extra approvals would depend on the public reaction after watching it in the cinemas.

I am not naïve and do know that the subject of communism is taboo in Malaysia. I maintain that Lelaki Komunis Terakhir was made with a certain sense of responsibility and sensitivity to history. It is not a propaganda film but a rather odd documentary. “Odd” is the word I heard when I screened it overseas, but most meant it in a nice way.
Being “odd” as it is, we never wanted a big nationwide release. Lelaki Komunis Terakhir is a documentary shot and finished on digital video. It is not a feature film with stars. It is therefore not “commercial.” There are only 3 cinemas in Malaysia equipped to show digital-video movies and these happen to be the 3 cinemas that we chose. (Berita Harian brought up a bizarre point that Kuala Lumpur and Penang have a majority Chinese population but I fail to see why this matters). Each cinema can fit not even 100 people so it is a very limited screening and hardly Lord of the Rings.

After discussion with Golden Screen Cinemas, we set 18 May for the release date on these 3 screens.

Oh yes: Due to its subject-matter, we were asked to hold a special screening for officers of the Special Branch unit of the Royal Malaysian Police Force. I never knew of any other film that has received such a request but we obliged. We screened it for an audience of 20 Special Branch officers. After the screening we had a nice discussion. They did not indicate any objection to the documentary; one said “It should be OK” but another said, “It’s very academic and most people will be bored.” A few of them took my name-card but said they had none of their own. We did not hear from them again.

All seemed to be going well until Berita Harian ran a series of articles criticizing the LPF’s decision to approve the documentary. Berita Harian was the only newspaper in the country to do this. These articles appeared on May 3, 4 and 5 of the newspaper. These included interviews with politicians, filmmakers and academics who seemed appalled that such a documentary was approved for screening.

On the evening of May 5, Red Films received instructions from the Ministry of Home Affairs to not screen Lelaki Komunis Terakhir anywhere in Malaysia. The reason cited was that “the public had protested.”

We of course cancelled the Golden Screen Cinemas release date and also an Ipoh charity screening on 19 May (for which separate approval was in the process of being obtained from the Ipoh police department).

The decision to ban the documentary was based on the series of articles in Berita Harian. I need to emphasise this point: No one in Berita Harian has seen the documentary. And no one interviewed by Berita Harian had seen it either.
According to friends of mine who were called up by Berita Harian (and who refused to make any comments), the question that was asked of them was “Do you approve of this Amir guy making a movie glorifying communism and Chin Peng?” This sort of leading question obviously got the answers that the paper was looking for. The people who were quoted were making comments on a documentary they had not even seen. Some of them didn’t even know of its existence until Berita Harian told them. In other words, they literally didn’t know what they were talking about.

I was called up by that newspaper on 3 May to give my comments. The reporter said, “There are all these people angry at you. How do you respond?” I said, “They haven’t even seen the documentary. How am I supposed to respond?” He seemed disappointed that he couldn’t goad me into saying anything else.

Why did Berita Harian object to the documentary even without seeing it? Berita Harian is a conservative newspaper whose cultural politics verges on the ethnocentric and semi-fascist. Proof of this was its intense daily campaign (which ran for weeks) to discredit Yasmin Ahmad’s Sepet after it won Best Film at the Malaysian Film Festival. Berita Harian was the only newspaper to take such exception to this interracial romance as being “insulting to Malay culture”. Its Assistant Entertainment Editor Akmal Abdullah even appeared on the RTM talk-show Fenomena Seni to further denounce Sepet and its follow-up Gubra along the same lines. He seemed to take particular exception to the plot of a Malay girl falling in love with an “infidel” (Chinese) youth.

Akmal in his weekly Thursday column Epilog (ironic that such a Malaycentric writer would choose such a foreign word) also ran a weekly campaign against any local film not made in the Malay language. He sees this as part of some kind of conspiracy to “destroy Malay culture”. He singles out internationally acclaimed, small movies like The Beautiful Washing Machine, Sanctuary and Chemman Chaalai (made by people from what he terms “foreign” and “immigrant races”) for attack but has offered no proof that he has even seen any of these fine works.

In fact, central to Berita Harian’s objection to Lelaki Komunis Terakhir seems to be that Chin Peng is an ethnic Chinese. I was ‘advised’ in these articles to concentrate on Malay characters from now on; even if they are radical or communist it’s OK!
More evidence can be found on Berita Harian’s reactionary, racist cultural views. This is the same newspaper that a few years ago ran a long, positive review of that famous anti-Jewish fraud, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion! The fact that it could run such a review with no apology or retraction already places it beyond the ethical standards of civilised international journalism.

I repeat: The censorship board, whose job it is to monitor these things, had obviously found nothing objectionable in the film; this is why it was passed uncut.
The censors of all the countries that have screened the documentary so far in festivals (including Germany, Hong Kong, Argentina) passed it uncut too.

In none of the international reviews published did the critics say anything about how this was a ‘dangerous’ movie that will ‘harm the public.’ The advantage these reviews have over Berita Harian: They were written by people who had actually viewed the documentary. Not one of them came to the conclusion that I was “glorifying” any political leader including Chin Peng. All those reviews are available here:

Variety Sign and Sight Film Kritiken Die Tageszeitung Sight & Sound
OK you might say those are ‘liberal’ and ‘tolerant’ countries whose standards don’t apply to us. But how about this: Singapore passed it uncut too! Yes, Singapore! The very country that barely has any opposition politicians or chewing gum.

It screened at the Singapore International Film Festival in late April. I was there at the full-house screening. I can assure you that no one ran amok after the screening or threatened national security. People just politely went back to the MRT and their lives.

It is, to put it mildly, horribly unfair for a movie to be banned based on comments by people who had not seen it. I am dismayed that a single newspaper (and a culturally chauvinistic one at that) could cause the Home Affairs Ministry to reverse the decision by the censors.
* Perhaps the objections are to the title? Well, Malaysia did once ban Daredevil and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers because of the words ‘devil’ and ‘morphin’ (which sounds like morphine) respectively. But that was in the past. The current Censorship Board seems determined to not make Malaysia an international laughingstock for ill-advised bans such as those. Do we want to return to those times?

* Perhaps the objection is to the very subject of communism? If communism is so untouchable, why is Malaysia now such pals with China and Cuba?

* Perhaps the objection is to “glorifying” communism and Chin Peng? I repeat: This charge has only been made by people who have not seen the documentary. Read the reviews by people who have seen it.

* Perhaps the objection is to painful depictions of the past? Lelaki Komunis Terakhir has no archive footage or historical recreations of war at all. The most violent image you will see is a strip of petai beans being removed from its tree in Bidor. Government-funded films like Leftenan Adnan, Paloh and Embun all feature violence but no one protested about those.

* Perhaps the objection is to the subject of Chin Peng? Well, Chin Peng’s book is not banned (even though he is), so why a different standard for the documentary, which was furthermore not made in cooperation with him?

* Perhaps the objection is to the fact that some communists were interviewed? Well, the 15-minute sequence in Betong (out of the 90 minutes of the whole documentary) does have retired men and women from the Communist Party of Malaya. But they are living lawfully as farmers and traders in land provided after the Peace Agreement in 1989 between Malaysia, the CPM and Thailand. Although they do describe some of their previous experiences in the jungle, they are in no way advocating a return to war. What does a Peace Agreement mean if the other side cannot even be seen and heard at all?

* Perhaps the objection is to the fact that Chin Peng is ethnic Chinese? Well, you got me there!
We will be meeting with the relevant Ministry to appeal the ban. I made the documentary for Malaysians first of all, since it is about our own past and present. Screening in foreign festivals is worthwhile but it has never been my primary intention. A Malaysian audience (the ones who can stay awake for a 90-minute documentary with no love stories, fight scenes or special effects) will understand it so much more.

This is what I humbly ask: If you feel the public has the right to see Lelaki Komunis Terakhir, please write to the press. The authorities do take note of reports in the media. (That’s why the ban happened in the first place!)

Even if you feel this doesn’t affect you, and you wouldn’t even want to watch the documentary anyway: What’s to stop the same newspaper from starting a campaign against some other local movie, book or song for being “not Malay enough”? That might certainly affect you in the future.
I made a multilingual documentary that explores the diversity and plurality of contemporary Malaysia to contrast against the more turbulent times of Chin Peng’s era. It is about both the geographic and historical ‘landscape’ that make up a country. It is this very diversity that is under threat if we allow chauvinists to determine what the rest of us can or cannot see.

Mani Ratnam's GURU

Ace Director Mani Ratnam's latest movie GURU...picture!

Lets's Wait N See!

Cheers!

Pudupettai

One enters the theatre with a lot of expectations, only to come out with a lot of questions.
By making someone vomit blood and putting a hell of a scare into people, Selvaraghavan has converted Pudupettai into a Kolakaranpettai and duped the audience into a fright.

Dhanush is in solitary confinement and from the moment he introduces himself as Kokki Kumar, the film goes into flashback and the story starts.

At an age when he should be attending school, poor slum boy Dhanush loiters about the streets. He sees his own father killing his mother. On learning that his father plans to kill him too, Dhanush runs like the devil and gets into an unsavory life style.

Dhanush joins the gang of Balasingh who is involves in all sorts of anti-social activities. In one encounter, he kills the brother of the MLA and becomes the don himself. The flashback comes to an end after showing his new life involving friendship with sex worker Sneha and enjoying the support of the local politician and how
Dhanush ends up in prison.

It is usually said that a man who lives by the sword, dies by it. But in the climax, Selvaraghavan has depicted that a man who lives by the sword, continues to live. After coming out of prison, Dhanush becomes an MLA and minister!

“He looks like a line drawn by a pencil. He is a henchman?” describes the MLA in the film of Dhanush. Dhanush’s character makes the onlooker express the same doubts.

Dhanush learns how to kill and when faced with an opponent, he chops him up easily like one
would cut vegetables, accompanied by blood curdling screamsof “Aei..Aei…” but this seems to have crossed the boundaries of realism. On seeing his mother’s murdered body, Dhanush weeps in torment and tries to escape from his murderous father. His acting is commendable only in this scene.

In the climax when he goes to kill the MLA, why should he wait till the MLA is drunk and has his food and then spew dialogues like, “My attack won’t be precise. You will have to adjust”? It is so comic.

As a sex worker who keeps getting beaten up, Sneha evokes sympathy. Why does a client who takes her out then beats her should be answered by Selvaraghavan only. As a person who has serviced lots of customers, it’s strange how she shows feelings as if it’s the first time for her when Dhanush enjoys her and why she screams like crazy when making out.

Sonia Agarwal is the sister of Dhanush’s friend. When Dhanush suddenly ties the mangalsutra around her neck at the wedding, she strangely shows no reaction at all.

Director Azhagamperumal who plays the role of the politician does a great job of it. Those directors, who are looking out for villains with
character, should keep him in mind.

Thinking that he is giving a realistic portrayal of a rowdy's life, the director has overlooked many things. It is true that no rowdy will forcibly marry a friend’s sister who is betrothed to marry another man.

When Dhanush is given the ordinary post of regional secretary, the presence of top police officers standing in line and showering him with wishes makes it seem that Selvaraghavan’s imagination has turned topsy-turvy.

Aravind Krishna’s cinematography and Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music are strong points of the film but the story and screenplay are so twisted that it is difficult to tolerate ‘Pudupettai.’

A lot of the scene have been cut in the cinema .Should get the DVD or VCd for the full version of the story

Is Cheran a True Artis?

Cheran has given an interview to a publication where he says that anyone who's critiquing his work is his opponent. In the same interview, he says Raj Kiran is a better actor than Vikram.

"Vikram is an illusion. The 3 roles that he did in Anniyan with different get-ups is no big deal," he said in a direct attack on Vikram.

No one should criticize his films. If they still go ahead and do so, "I'll object in strong language." Cheran still maintains that such people are not nice people.

He does not like others to criticize him, but he can criticize Vikram? Among Vikram's fabulous acting in films like 'Sethu,' 'Pithamagan' and 'Kasi,' why single out 'Anniyan'? Those who know Cheran are not surprised. 'Desiya Geetham' was a super flop.

"Films that deal with people's problems are rarely welcomed by people. If they had, 'Desiya Geetham' would have run for 100 days," claimed Cheran. After 'Autograph' and 'Thavamaai Thavamirundhu' saw success, there's a change in the way Cheran talks. "The people do not hesitate to support good films!"

In the posters of 'Autograph' and 'Thavamaai Thavamirundhu,' one can see lines like "The fruit of hard labor," "Support for the nice people" and "Super victory for people's cinema." If this is the fruit of hard labor, does that mean he did not labor over his films that flopped? Was he not a good man when he was directing those films? Where did the people's power go then? Cheran prides himself on doing straight forward films, but how straight forward is he? Are all the films he has made, born out of his own thoughts? No! And his one time assistants can vouch for that.

Can you believe that the inspiration for 'Desiya Geetham' was a serial? The truth is not always sweet. In 1997, the weekly mag Ananda Vikatan started a special serial in the Deepavali special. There are 4 boys, all of them are nice and interested in society's welfare. Their 16th step is to kidnap the minister. They put their plan into action. To make him unrecognizable, his head is shaved.

If this story sounds familiar to you, you will recognize that the inspiration for Cheran's 'Desiya .' In 'Desiya Geetham' also, there are 4 young men and they are nice, socially aware people. They kidnap the chief minister but they shave off only the centre of his head. "Just like in my serial, the 4 young men in Cheran's film have their distinct characteristics. One is born to lead. The second one takes everything in his stride. The characterization has been adapted exactly as in the story," says Malarone, the author of the serial. Cheran's assistant of those days also vouches for this. The issue does not stop here.

'Otraiadi Kaadhal Paadhai' in the Pongal malar. The story is of a young man who falls in love (honestly) with many girls at the same time. "I had named the story as 'Anbai Sumandhavan' but the Vikatan editor changed it to 'Otraiadi Kaadhal Paadhai,' said Malarone as he went back in time. The hero of this story falls in love truly like the 'Autograph' hero. But nothing comes to fulfillment.

An interesting element is that, just like each love story takes place in a different landscape in 'Autograph,' the hero of 'Otraiadi Kaadhal Paadhai' meets his lady loves during the course of his travels in different places. We can give more examples of how 'Autograph' is a take off of 'Otraiadi Kaadhal Paadhai.'

But that is not our intention. Nor do we want to pinpoint to everyone that Cheran is stealing the story of writers to make into films. Our aim is clear. As he claims, Cheran is not a true artiste. There are a thousand more artistes who are more dedicated and knowledgeable.

There are people in Tamilnadu who have written stories similar to what Cheran has done and what he had thought even before Cheran himself did. Cheran must first stop his egoistic claim that he alone is a true artiste and what he produces alone is cinema.

He has to cultivate the attitude to accept criticism. Only then can he be in a position to create movies that could be accepted internationally. Only after that can he get the status where he can claim himself to be the heir to Satyajit Ray as well as assuming other labels. Indeed Cheran has that capability and dedication.

What Does High Definition Really Mean?

I've been spending some quality time with the high-definition Sony HDR-HC3 over the past couple of weeks, and I think I might have to do something that we professional writers don't like to do: admit that I may have been wrong.

A few months ago I expressed my reservations about HD camcorders: I was concerned that they were too expensive, that it was too difficult to edit the video they produce, and that there were limited options for playing back the video. But Sony's HDR-HC3, which records high-definition video to MiniDV videotapes using a new format called HDV, has proven me wrong on a couple of counts.

The camcorder isn't cheap--with the $1300 it costs, you could buy four Canon MiniDV camcorders and still have money left over for accessories--but the ability to down-convert the video it captures makes it easy to edit and output to DVD while still retaining the high-definition original. And the slow-motion feature is fun as well: I've posted a few example videos on my blog.

High Definition = High Quality

So what does moving to a high-definition camcorder really mean in terms of quality? Let's look at an example: this image is a frame from a video shot with the HDR-HC3 in HDV mode (warning: it's a large 512KB image), while this is the same image in standard definition. Both images were saved as single frames in Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 with deinterlacing enabled (which removes the jittery line effect you often see on captured video frames); the second was converted to standard definition using the HDR-HC3's down-conversion feature. The black bars in both images are added by Premiere--you don't see them in the video.

Here's another example: If you look at the photo of the cat's whiskers in this video still, you'll notice the extra resolution of the HDV frame. The 1080i HDV video that the HDR-HC3 records has much more resolution than the standard-definition image that has been down-converted: 1080i video is recorded at a resolution of 1080 by 1444 pixels, while standard-resolution video is 720 by 480 pixels.

What that means is that you can see much more detail. Look at the kitten's whiskers, for instance: In the standard-definition frame, the near-horizontal whiskers look jaggy, and the smaller ones can be barely seen. In the HDV frame, the whiskers are much more defined, and the jaggies on the near-horizontal ones are gone. This underlines the fact that if you shoot video in HDV, you get much more detail, which leads to much more realistic looking video. And, although the HDR-HC3 is not that much more expensive than a decent standard-definition camcorder, it records a lot more detail.
High-Definition Challenges

HDV does have its downsides, though. Look closely at this enlargement of the kitten's left eye: While the HDV frame is undeniably sharper, there is a slight, but noticeable pattern of square blocks on the left (it may be difficult to see in the small version on this page). This is caused by HDV's extra compression: In order to squeeze high-definition video onto the same tapes that standard-definition MiniDV camcorders use, the video has to be much more heavily compressed, and this leads to some blockiness.

But that's a pretty minor issue. Most people won't notice the blockiness. It only becomes a problem when you start to do compositing, which is where you replace a color with another image, so you can transport yourself from a plain green background to a tropical island. This blockiness means that the edges of area of color to be removed aren't clearly defined, which leads to a "halo" effect.

Editing HDV video is still a challenge. HDV uses a compression scheme in which only one out of every 15 frames is completely captured. With the 14 frames that follow it, only the differences between this and the previous frame are captured and stored on tape (video geeks call this interframe compression). This compression is generally not visible to the human eye, although you can sometimes see it if you are watching a video and the whole screen changes from one frame to the next, like a scene illuminated by a strobe light. Nonetheless, it makes editing HDV video much more complex for the computer, as it has to recalculate all 15 frames even if you edit only one.

I found that editing the HDR-HC3's HDV footage on a reasonably fast PC (a dual-core 2.8-GHz Pentium with 1GB of RAM) was significantly slower than editing standard-definition video, especially when things get complicated. It was particularly slow going when I worked on two HDV files that needed to be edited together, or when I needed to do some color correction, which changes the colors in the video and forces the computer to recalculate every frame. However, editing HDV is possible with a decent machine, just slower than working with standard-definition video.

So I may have to eat my own words; with camcorders like Sony's HDR-HC3, shooting high-definition video is becoming more and more realistic for home videographers. Right now, the resolution that most camcorders shoot at is called standard definition. But I'm thinking that in a few years, what's now called high definition may become the standard.

My sentiments as well

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JP!!! MAY THE LORD BLESS YOU MORE THAN THE AGONG, SINCE THE AGONG HAS EVERYTHING!
My sentiments go with balan and prem... when's the next meeting. I hope you guys are real serious about the trip. No one seem to have responded other than sri. I hope we can fix/ confirm everything in the next meeting :)
By the way, sasi, you need to change your pc or change the internet explorer. hehe.
Prem, good luck with your new movie.... Can't wait for your next lelonging sesssion..hehehe (that's for your testimonial in my friendster!)

Talking about da vinci code.... you guys should catch this movie called "Blood of the Templars". Its like a modern day happening for an fight that happened a thousand years ago. Pretty interesting movie. I think it was a french movie dubbed in english because of the obvious lip syncing. Don't bother much with the acting skills and all though cause its not that appealing but the concept of the movie was very much explaining about the Priory of Sion. The nine knights and the holy grail, pretty much the essentials of da vinci code and angel and demons.
Its on star movies..

Vanakkam Salam Namaste Friends!

Hi Friends!

I wish Jaya Prabha and our Agung Happy Birthday....Have Fun! I wish our Thailaivar MS. Prem all the very best to his next film....!

Yes Mr. MS Prem you are right, GURU poster is look like poster of 'BROTHERHOOD OF WOLF'....someone forwarded the poster to me so just put it in our blog. Not sure whether it's real GURU poster or they just created it.

About the movie Da Vinci Code, I saw a negative comment in our blog. I happen to watch this movie last week and I would say Ron Howard did a good job and the screenplay was good. I like the way they explain about the 'Last Supper' and the script explain everything more than one time so if we don't know who is Jesus and Mary Magdalene we still can understand the story. The only that I m not happy is the ending, it's flat and lackluster.

I am agree with Mr.MS Prem that the book is better than the movie. We should bear in mind this is not fantacy or fiction film like Harry Potter or LOTR but this is fact and very very very sensitive and contoversial issue. If Ron Howard and screenplay writer follow as per the book.....third world war will happen and his head will be in chopping board.....I would say he handle things very carefully....to make people undertand the Da Vinci Code.....but when we look at film in the film angle or POV we might not happy with the Da Vinci Code and there is always a pro and con about the movie. The Best Part is Da Vinci Code is still the # 1 film in the world at the moment....they still making money......!

If we want a clear picture about the Da Vinci Code and whether Jesus married or not only two person can answer this question. First is Jesus himself and second is Leonardo Da Vinci......which is impossible......whether Jesus married or not for Me I still respect HIM.....If Jesus or Leonardo Da Vinci happen to come to earth I have a lot and lot of question to ask both of them.... :)

Guys, pls don't get offended. This is just my personal opinion about the film and it's very subjective and depends on individual taste.

About the 'Pudhupettai', I yet watch the film but I heard it's very intresting.

So, when is our next meeting?

Cheers!
Balan Ji

m.s. prem's here!

Rajin posting of 'what's wrong real' reminds me of my feeling when v started this blog. I've been busy with my work but like kamini, i still checkout the posting. So, rajin, not every1 got things to say or share. stay chill.

Currently a new culture hall/theater @ batu caves is opened for both local and foreign tourist. A 12-15 min documentary on Indian culture and Thaipusam is shown daily basis. I telling this b'cos i edited it. so checked it out when you r there.

Mr. Balan, 'GURU' poster is kinda look like poster of 'BROTHERHOOD OF WOLF'. 'BoW' is a french movie n' not 2 b missed by editors/compositor.

And to Ismail Darbar, he definitly can go to HELL.

Da vinci Code sucks. The book better than the movie. Ron Howard is x my favorite director. I liked his APOLLO 13 mainly b'cos Tom hanks and it's based on true story. His other movie not that interesting though it might won OSCAR. Not all award winning movie worth watching. But 'BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF BEHOLDER'.

Abt Pudhupettai, i liked it very much though the movie reminds me of NAYAGAN, GODFATHER TRILOGY and very much of SCARFACE. i like violent movie so selvaraghavan did a goodjob. Virumandi has more violent scene then Pudhupettai. Yuvan music is very good.

Aren't v supposed 2 hav meetin in this JUNE?

JAYA PRABHA'S birthday is on 3rd June. Saturday. Dun 4get wish her.

So dat's my posting quota fulfilled. Currently i'm workin on my script for next movie, a crime thriller, so i'll absent from this blog but once a while, i'll check REAL REELS.
