I am better than A.R. Rahman

People talking good about A.R. Rahman's mindblowing tunes....people admires him for his good work....big Directors willing to wait for his music.... But there is one guy talking the other side about Rahman....he is non other than Sanjay Leela Bansali's DEVDAS Music Director Ismail Darbar.....

'My work is better than Rahman's'

Though the movie bombed, Kisna's music fared well, and Darbar managed to shine in spite of sharing credit with the legendary A R Rahman.

Darbar believes his work on Kisna was, in fact, better than Rahman's. "My work has always been better than Rahman's. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was better than Taal, and Devdas was better than Saathiya," he says.

He tells Contributing Entertainment Correspondent Patcy N how he got Kisna because his work was good. The first of a two-part conversation:

Rahman did not have time to compose the music and Subhashji wanted to start his film. So he approached me. Subhashji had spoken to Rahman earlier about the joint music direction as we did not want any misunderstanding.

I do not usually do movies where there are two music directors. But Kisna was special.

People have told me my work was better than Rahman's in Kisna. No one has told me otherwise. It could be because I have made eight songs while Rahman has created only two.

But my work has always been better than his. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was better than Taal. Even Devdas was better than Saathiya.

But it is destiny that he got international fame. Angrezo ne uska haath pakad liya hai toh logo ko lagta hai ke yeh kuch zyada hi hai (Foreigners encouraged him so people think he is very good).

I am not saying this because of jealousy. This is the bitter truth.

Whenever my work is good and he takes the awards, I feel bad.

I wonder why people run after name and fame, and not good work. Kyunki hamare yahan bahut kum akal ke log hai (we have very few intelligent people here). We see some foreigners holding someone's hand, and he becomes a big man.

But the foreigners have also praised my work in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas.

Rahman (below, right) and I have not worked together on any of the Kisna songs. His two songs were recorded even before I started work on the film. I didn't even speak to him for any of the tunes and nor did I listen to his songs before I composed mine.

I was told that Kisna is set in the 1940s. So I started visualising the songs in that period. If there were a qawwali in the nawab's haveli, how would it be? Besides, it should also appeal to the new generation. I am happy I have done justice to the film.

What u guys going to say.....Go To Hell Ismail Darbar...or....You are right Ismail Darbar......?

....fishing Umbrella Cotton Kite!

Cheers!

The Broken Code

The Da Vinci Code…

I have watched this movie last Sunday. Well first of all we all know about the controversy that surrounding the film. The church reaction to the movie, the writer Dan Brown court case and all the demonstration going on to stop the film world wide.

I agree with Sri that this is not Ron Howard's best movie, there is nothing to talk about this movie in a film term. The camera work, cinematography, CG, Graphics, screenplay or direction. Nothing is happening at all….

Forget the hype; forget the Dan Brown fan club; forget religion; forget Tom Hanks' hair. The Da Vinci Code is The Bourne Identity, par boiled and wrapped in confusion.

It's another guy-and-gal-on-the-run scenario. They don't know what they are supposed to have done - killed four people, apparently - but are sensible enough not to stop and enquire. Instead of the full technological might of the CIA against them, it's the Vatican, whose influence, not to mention unscrupulous methods, is well known to the Agnostic Fellowship worldwide.
But what make this film stand out is the story… the issue that the story try to highlight. At the centre is the search for the Holy Grail and the question of Jesus' mortality. Was he a man, or the Son of God? Was he celibate, or having it off with Mary Magdalene? Looking objectively from a non-believer's perspective, his sex life seems irrelevant and yet if you take the resurrection literally and sign up to the paranormal version of events it does matter. There is much talk of "the bloodline," which the defenders of the faith want to extinguish permanently - thus the chase and the code and Jean Reno's Opus Dei French cop's high blood pressure.

The question whether Jesus Christ is celibate or not is enough to shake the very fundamental of the Christian believe…. This story could be an eye opener for ppl to think could it be right?
So could it be right?

For me even if Jesus Christ is really a God, and let say one day he came back to earth just to visit us… can we believe that is Jesus Christ? Can we accept it? Can the church recognize him? Well I think if Jesus him self came and say “Look I’m Jesus Christ the only son of god, let me help You” We gone laugh at him. We might think this man is crazy.. Evan if the Pope came and recognize him that he his Jesus Christ he never gone admit it . If there is Jesus than what is the point having church.. it will destroyed the Church… It’s better to have church rather than having Jesus him self…. Right…?

Overall this isn't a bad film, it's just a slightly above average thriller that will be seen by countless millions due to the phenomenal book sales, and the free publicity with the clerics weighing in, a court case at the perfect time, and plenty of books discussing the themes found in Brown's best seller. A different main pairing and some tweaking with the script would have delivered something with a bit more edge, but all involved will make their bank managers happy whatever.

Da Vinci Code is not a Code its a Hint

Majid Majidi

In world cinema, films from Iran are in the forefront.
In the 1979 Islamic revolution, the resulting upheavals totally shattered the growth of Iranian cinema.
More than 200 films were banned.

Only after 1987, Iranian films started to slowly breathe again. The cultural department introduced several measures to support film making. In light of this freedom, directors like Masood Kimiai, Nasser Refaie and Abbas Kiarostami made world class films. After this, many young directors made their entry into Iranian cinema.

One of the prominent directors is Majid Majidi. In the 1980s, Iranian films won more than 80 awards worldwide. In 2000, the figure rose to 118. To understand the development and importance of Iranian films, here are some important facts. 'Children of Heaven' directed by Majid Majidi won attention worldwide in 1997. The vibration created by this film lasted more than 3 days, says cinematographer/director P C Sriram. For director Balu Mahendra, 'Children of Heaven' is one among his 10 favorite films. This film won 4 awards at the 1997 film festival in Montreal.

This film that charmed film lovers worldwide is about a little boy and his sister. The little boy Ali gets his sister Zara's torn shoes mended and returns home. On the way, he stops at a grocery shop to pick up something for his sick mom and puts down the shoe parcel near a can of trash. A garbage collector passing by picks up the trash papers and also the shoe packet and moves on.

When Ali finds the shoe missing, he searches frantically, then goes home in tears - they can't afford a new pair because they are poor. The mother is a sickly lady and the father does not have a steady job. They even owe the landlord 5 months rent. When Zara asks him about her shoes, he tells her and they exchange notes (when doing home work) on what to do as Zara had no shoes to wear to school. Zara has morning school and Ali has evening school. To escape the father's wrath, they come to a solution.

Zara wears Ali's one size bigger joggers to school. As soon as the bell rings, she runs all the way home through short cut streets. Ali waits at a point, where he hurriedly gives her slippers and wears his shoes and runs to his school. He is invariably late on most days. This goes on for a while. One day one shoe falls off as Zara is running and falls into the gutter stream. She runs and retrieves it. Zara looks yearningly at the shining footwear of other children. Ali gets late for school a few times and the head master reprimands him.

He somehow finds excuses. On one occasion, he is asked to bring someone from his home, but his class master manages to get Ali off the hook. Following this, Zara finds one of the girls in her school wearing her lost shoes. With her brother, she follows the girl and finds out where she lives. On learning that the girl's father is blind, Ali and Zara return home quietly.

Ali sees a notice about a 4km inter-school running race and the 3rd price is a pair of jogging shoes! He plans to participate and win the shoes for his sister. He misses the heats, begs his teacher and manages to take part in the race where hundreds of kids run. Ali maintains being 3rd!! A kid pushes him a few metres before finishing line. He gets so mad, he speeds up and runs like crazy and finishes first! His dream of winning the shoes for Zara is shattered.

He looks dejected when photos are taken of him winning the race. When he comes home, Zara gives him a hopeful look. But he sits dejected by the small water fountain in front of his house. Zara runs into the house crying. Ali's own shoes are in tatters and he quietly removes them, resting his blistered feet in the cooling water. The film ends with his dad coming home on his bicycle with 2 new pairs of shoes!! Such a simple story told in such a charming way.

No wonder 'Children of Heaven' has charmed one and all. The innocence of childhood, the little gestures of affection, the human nature of the characters make this film a must see for all ages and is valid any time it is seen. It is usual for directors to show children being ill treated to gain audience sympathy. In contrast, the characters around the children in this film are shown as children friendly and not against children. The children are also not put to great difficulty.

Before Ali meets his sister after the race, his father is seen shopping for shoes. Even then, one feels a wave of sympathy for the children. It is thanks to the way Majid Majidi has evolved the story line. For those who wish to make good cinema and for those who wish to see good cinema, 'Children of Heaven' is not to be missed!

Some films by Majid Majidi:
  1. The Willow Tree (2005)
  2. Olympics in Camp (2003)
  3. Barefoot to Herat (2002)
  4. Baran (2001)
  5. The Colour of Paradise (1999)
  6. The Children of Heaven (1997)
  7. The Father (1996)
  8. God Shall Come (1995)
  9. The Last Village (1993)
  10. Baduk (1992)

S.J.Suryah Doing Graphics film

With full facial hair, S.J. Suryah looks like the youngish T.R. "I will remove them in a day or two" says he, while claiming that he has done a wonderful script after 'A...Aa'. His new film is called 'Pesum Daivangal'.
He is doing this film keeping children and women in mind. Graphics were given prominence in the films New and A...Aa. In New the transformation of a young boy into a young adult was handled with graphics and in A A a the heroÂ’s and heroineÂ’s thoughts were shaped into images through graphics.

But in Pesum Daivangal, graphics will be as important as another hero. S.J.Suryah has planned to use graphics throughout the film in the fashion of Hollywood films. He is the hero of the film. The search for the heroine is on. Is the heroine a new face or the familiar one? It will be known in a day or two.

Why name the film as Pesum Daivangal? Sivaji did a film titled Pesum Daivam We have made it into a plural and called it Pesum Daivangl. Cleverly discussing about the title, he side steps from telling the story. He believes that Pesum Daivangal will be a much talked about film. We too believe him!

PS: I was shocked to see Samy vellu in the Blog..Thoughtht he was our new member....

SAMY SUING TWO DAILIES

Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu is suing two vernacular tamil newspapers over reports which quoted the MIC president as saying that former PM Tun Dr M had done nothing for Malaysian Indians.

"The newspaper, Malaysia Nanban and Makkal Osai, had purposely distorted my speech at the Johor MIC state conventio on Tuesday to create unnecessary friction between me and Dr M," he told the Star last night.

Both newspaper had frontpaged stories under the heading, Mahathir did not do anything as he ha dpromised and Nahee , Mahathir respectively.

The stories quoted Samy Vellu as saying that Dr M had done nothing for Malaysian Indians while he was the PM

Samy , who is in Kuching , explained that a dellegate at the Johor MIC concention had stood up and asked him what had happend to the 3% equity proposal for Malaysian Indians.

"In reply, I said that in the 8th Malaysia Plan, Dr M was the one who made the 3% equity proposal fro Malaysian Indians in the Third Outline Perspective Plan (OPP, which was to be achieved by 2010.

"I also said that at the end of the 8MP, nothing has happend, Nahee (Nothing in hindi). But I never said that Dr M had done nothing for Malaysian Indiands.

On da trip

Hi guys,
I think Rajin and I seem to have suggested the same place. I've looked through the internet. Done my research and all, and i can't seem to find any other suitable place. There are cheaper resorts but they don't seem to provide proper packages.
So i guess genting village is in. The 4d/3n package seem okie to me to. That means, if we follow the dates fixed at the meeting, it'll be on August 1, 2, 3 and 4.
What do you'll think? We will need to make reservations and all, how come i don't see anyone else replying to the blog besides the panchathantiram with addition from sri

The Da Vinci Code Controversy

We have heard a lot of controversy going on about the movie The Da Vinci Code....
But what accualty the controversy that surrounds his upcoming film The Da Vinci Code. '

I think good fiction stimulates good controversy or discussion. One of the major reasons the plot to The Da Vinci Code is so controversial is that it looks at the beginning fabric of Christianity and the Catholic Church and claims that there is an ancient cover up that can destroy all we have come to understand about religion. Just as a hint, the story will take a closer look at the relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene; a female figure that the Catholic Church claims to be a whore (or ex-whore).

Personally I feel the biggest controversy behind the film should be one single question-- Why the hell didn't they make Angels & Demons first? Though this book did not sell as well as The Da Vinci Code it was still a top-seller a better story. Besides, it is the first book in the Robert Langdon tales and would be a perfect warm-up to a Da Vinci Code sequel.

Let's be honest-- these films are sure to do well at the box office therefore limiting the risk behind creating both films at once.Any other controversy around the film?

How about what the hell is going on with Tom Hanks' hair?

Kollywood turns tech savvy :

For the first time, Satellite Imagery Technology (SIT) is being used in the Tamil film Azhagai Irukkirai Bhayamai Irukkiradhu. Chennai-based Digital Magic executed this technology. Arul Moorthy, who heads Digital Magic said, "Normally the camera zooms out to a height of a maximum of 20 feet. But in this film, the camera, after zooming in on the actors, is pulled out to an extent that you will be able to see all of Chennai for a few seconds using satellite imagery." The film stars Bharat and Mallika.Cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Vijay Milton has used six layer compositing with camera movement and 2D-cartoon animation in the film. Digital Magic has executed visual effects for several films including the recently released Aadhi, Sudhesi, Sivakasi, Yugaa, Mercury Pookal and Thiruttu Payale. They have a major project in the pipeline - a 90-minute full length animated fantasy film in English, Tamil and Hindi. Apart from this, Digital Magic has opened an academy to train those seeking a career in animation and other related areas. Professionals working in the company, which has latest state of the art technology, conduct this short-term course.

Who Is Satyajit Ray....?

Some of our friends might be wondering who is this Satyajit Ray.....He is another Golden Gift From GOD to India cinema.

Satyajit Ray, an Indian filmmaker and among the dozen or so great masters of world cinema, is known for his humanistic approach to cinema. He made his films in Bengali, a language spoken in the eastern state of India - West Bengal. And yet, his films are of universal interest. They are about things that make up the human race - relationships, emotions, struggle, conflicts, joys and sorrows.

Satyajit Ray, the master storyteller, has left a cinematic heritage that belongs as much to India as to the world. His films demonstrate a remarkable humanism, elaborate observation and subtle handling of characters and situations. The cinema of Satyajit Ray is a rare blend of intellect and emotions. He is controlled, precise, meticulous, and yet, evokes deep emotional response from the audience. His films depict a fine sensitivity without using melodrama or dramatic excesses. He evolved a cinematic style that is almost invisible. He strongly believed - "The best technique is the one that's not noticeable".

Though initially inspired by the neo-realist tradition, his cinema belongs not to a specific category or style but a timeless meta-genre of a style of story telling that touches the audience in some way. His films belong to a meta-genre that includes the works of Akira Kurosawa, Alfred Hitchcock, Charles Chaplin, David Lean, Federico Fellini, Fritz Lang, John Ford, Ingmar Bergman, Jean Renoir, Luis Bunuel, Yasujiro Ozu, Ritwik Ghatak and Robert Bresson. All very different in style and content, and yet creators of cinema that is timeless and universal.

Satyajit Ray and my life

Since Balan and Prem have mentioned about Satyajit Ray movie... i recall the fisrt time i watch Satyajit movie....

I only came across Satyajit name when i was studying in Academic TV3. But before i know who is Satyajit... i have watch his movie....

Well as you guys know i have studied in Universiti Malaya in Language and Linguistic..... so i have so intrested in poem.... My father have keep a book called "Gitaanjali"...(The Gitanjali or `song offerings' by Rabindranath Tagore (1861--1941), Nobel prize for literature 1913, with an introduction by William B. Yeats (1865--1939), Nobel prize for literature 1923. First published in 1913. )

So when the first time i read it.. I felt this is the most beautiful thing that i ever read, Gitanjali was the most honest poem that really open my eyes....

so make the story short, my father also have a VHS of the movie "Rabindranath Tagore"... the author of Gitanjali.... so because of my interested I watch this movie.

This movie is like a docu drama movie about the life and work of the Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 “because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West.”

The story start as Rabindranath Tagore was the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore, born in Calcutta. He was educated at home. At seventeen he was sent to England for formal schooling, which he did not complete. Tagore was knighted by the ruling British Government in 1915, but within a few years he resigned the honor as a protest against British policies in India.

That time when I watch the movie it was quite a boring movie, as you know it was a black and white movie very slow pace movie… But I watched for Rabindranath Tagore as he was my mentor at that time.

So I was doing a thesis on Tagore and his GITANJALI … and I have to go thru the vhs again to know more details on him… then only I came a cross Satyajit Ray…. He was the director of the movie….

Then the next day I went to the UM library and search for the name Satyajit Ray…. I found a book called ‘Our films Their films’ written by Satyajit Ray.

Calling it excellent is certainly an understatement. It ranks high among my favorite books. This book is so good that I feel only someone like Arnav is fit to give a decent review of it. If his movies are even half as good as he writes –please don’t hang me for this- then certainly he is the best thing that happened to Indian cinema. That very book have inspired me to study about film and that how I ended up in Academic TV3.

Than after that I was searching for other movies of him ,my II semester, once my friend – (Ramesh… I guess )and I started discussing the legend that Satyajit Ray was. Neither of us had seen any of his movies and just knew tits and bits about him. We talked and to be able to declare that he is over hyped, decided to see his ‘Pather Panchali’. We searched all the video parlors that we could cover in an evening but couldn’t get any of his movie. Most parlor-owners hadn’t heard of him and the one who had, declared that the CDs/DVDs of his movies are yet to be made. So we came to the conclusion that Ray IS actually over hyped and called it a day. Over the time I realized Ray was in fact, a multi-faceted creative soul. I read his Feluda series and few articles about him. Still I couldn’t form an opinion about his movies or style etc.

Then getting more expose about other film and director…. Especially my favorite director Stanley Kubrick, I have forgotten about Satyajit Ray… I wish a can get some of his movie and there was one time RTM have played one of his movie i can't remmeber the name it was long time ago....

For the transport... can we hire a van and we drive there... wat you guys think...

satjit ray's appu

is there any chance that i can get satyajit ray's appu trilogy? i saw balan ji mention it abt it.

iz there a choice #2?

i,m ok wit choice 1. the price (i think) iz quite reasonable.

i watched "Thiruttu Payalae" few days back and agree wit balan. Jeeva acting is very good. the story line though is not new but different compare wit other current tamil movies. a worthwhile watch.

CHOICE ONE: GENTING VILLAGE, TIOMAN

ADDRESS: Genting Village, Tioman Island, Johor, Malaysia.

INFORMATIONRating : budget chaletCheck-in time - 14:00pmCheck-out time - 12:00nn

I've checked on the most comfortable and cheapest for this chalet. You guys have the option of choosing

3D/2N fullboard package (Prices quoted is per person)

1. Standard aircond chalet (twin sharing) = RM250 per person

2. Standard non-aircond chalet (twin sharing) =RM199 per person

*** The package is inclusive of return boat transfer from Mersing-tioman-mersing.
*** Meals of 2 breakfast, 1 lunch and 2 dinners
*** One day Island tour

Snorkelling equipment is RM8 per person
Marine Park conservation fee is RM5 per person

So all in all, (if we take the aircond chalet), each of us will be paying RM300 for the whole trip including bus fare from puduraya to mersing. Another option is we can share and drive to mersing so can share fuel and toll charges among us.

Thiruttu Payalae

Happen to watch this movie called "Thiruttu Payalae" last night. This movie features Jeevan(Kaakha Kaakha)as a hero with Sonia Agrawal and Malavika playing the female leads. Directed by Susi Ganesan (Mani's Asst)...remember this guy who directed Five Star and Virumbukiren.

The story is about a man who takes the easy way out / short cut to make money (blackmailing after knowing the affair of a woman with her husbands friend) and the trial and turbulations that he faces after that....reflects some contemporary movies in Bollywood.

Intresting movie with some thriller elements....Vivek for comedy...as usual superb especially with his Cylon language.

Worth Watching!

Cheers!

A Bedtime Story BY M. Night Syamalan

M.Night Syamalan is one of my favourite Director...not because he is a Indian but I really like the plot of his stories /movies. Syamalan is a comic freak so all his movies will have some comic elements...no doubts on it. He is a sentimental and suspense guy and all his films will have some suspense ,paranormal or extraordinary and human values. Eventhough technolgy improve very much in world film industries but this guy still stick to his style and hallmarks.

I hardly see a dramatic graphic or animation in MNS and Maniratnam film and this not because they don't have budget...perhaps hallmarks or style of this people and they have their own group of great fans and I am one of them.

Hallmarks of Shyamalan's films include final-act plot twists, depictions of ordinary people encountering and dealing with the paranormal or extraordinary, as well as cameo appearances by Shyamalan himself in each of the films (an homage to the director and master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock, whose style Shyamalan has emulated)and to be noted here Syamalan is great fan of Alfred Hitchcock. His movies are also noted for the sharp screenplays, their effective, often subtle musical scores from composer James Newton Howard and highly tense and suspenseful sequences. The movie The Sixth Sense, which tells about a boy's interaction with spirits, hardly used computer animation or a loud background score.

After "The Village" MNS next film will be "Lady In The Water" will be opening July 21st, 2006 worldwide. Heralded as Shyamalan's E.T., the film will star Paul Giamatti and Bryce Dallas Howard who also starred in The Village.

Let's Wait and See!

Cheers!

Management Lesson

Johnny wanted to screw a girl in his office.....

but she belonged to someone else...

One day Johnny got so frustrated that he went up to her and said

I'll give you a 1000 dollars if you let me screw you....but the girl
said NO. Johnny said I'll be fast, I'll throw the money on the floor,
you bend down, I'll be finished by the time you pick it up.

She thought for a moment and said that she would have to consult her boyfriend.....

so she called her boyfriend and told him the story. Her boyfriend says ask
him for 2000 dollars, pick up the money very fast, he won't even be
able to get his pants down. So she agrees and accepts the proposal.

Half an hour goes by and the boyfriend is waiting for his girlfriend to call.

Finally after 45 mins the boyfriend calls and asks what happened......

She said "THE BASTARD USED COINS!!!"

PENCIL the movie

Hi Friends!

Y'day night I was in my aunt's house and while having a dinner happen to watch this movie called PENCIL in ASTRO Vanavil. This movie was Directed by Singer Subash and Produced by Media Concept.

I just watched for a while only and later we change to other channel to see football. The movie is about a mentaly retarded man who is a bread winner for his family. The mentally retarded character acted by Subash him self. Overall he done a good job but too much focus on the main character...which make the movie a bit boring. His acting shows that he really done a lot of home work before do the character.

There is one old lady character which is recalled me of SatyajitRays Appu Trilogy Movie...

Good Job Subash and keep up your good work!

Real Reels always support local film makers....

Cheers!
